The Champions League, which represents the pinnacle of club football, is underway. Paris Saint-Germain, crowned the kings of Europe last season after a dramatic penalty shootout win over Arsenal, will inevitably have a target on their backs as they embark on another quest for glory.

Conquering Europe remains the ultimate goal for many teams, but the Champions League is often laden with uncertainty.

What should you expect from this season’s competition? Who are the likely contenders? We’ve answered these questions and more in our guide.

Key Takeaways

  • PSG are the defending champions after beating Arsenal in last season’s Final on penalties
  • French giants are looking to emulate Real Madrid by lifting trophy for the third straight campaign
  • UEFA have brought in a new rule for yellow cards and suspensions
  • Barcelona are the favourites at 5.00 to win the Champions League
  • Como and Sabah will be making their Champions League debut this term

What’s Different About the 26/27 Champions League Campaign?

After introducing an expanded 36-league club phase for the 2024/25 campaign, the 2026/27 edition will play out like that once again.

The top eight teams automatically cement a Round of 16 berth, while teams finishing 9th to 24th contest a two-legged play-off tie, with the winners punching their ticket to the knockout round. And for the teams occupying the bottom 12 places, they will be eliminated from the competition.

The only major rule change concerns yellow cards and suspensions. Previously, players received a one-match ban for accumulating three yellow cards.

However, this season, players will get more leeway, and they will be handed a one-match suspension after accruing four yellows. Further suspensions will be triggered by even-numbered cautions, so six yellows, eight yellows, and so forth.

And what about the teams? Como, who are managed by Premier League legend Cesc Fabregas, will be taking their Champions League bow after finishing fourth in Serie A last term. Como’s achievement is made even more impressive by the fact they were only promoted back to the first tier of Italian football in 2024.

Meanwhile, Azerbaijan outfit Sabah, who were only founded in 2017, are making their Champions League debut. Having achieved a domestic double last term, Sabah will be looking to ruffle a few feathers.

The managerial landscape has also changed. Enzo Maresca, who succeeded Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, will be looking to emulate the Catalan who hoisted the trophy in 2023.

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho made a dramatic return to the Bernabeu over the summer to coach 15-time European champions Real Madrid once again. Achieving Champions League success will be the main objective, and Los Blancos will be eager to improve on last season’s showing when they crashed out in the quarter-finals following a 6-4 aggregate defeat to Bayern Munich.

Big Summer Signings

The summer transfer window was a hive of activity, and we’ve picked out a eye-catching additions made by the top clubs.

Barcelona (Rodri)

A man with international credentials, having won the European Championships and World Cup with Spain, Rodri, a former Ballon d’Or winner, will add guile to Barca’s midfield.

Technically gifted and excellent at breaking lines, Rodri spent seven immensely successful years at Manchester City, chalking up 298 appearances, and he lifted the Champions League. His experience will count for a lot.

Liverpool (Bradley Barcola)

Having splashed out £123 million, Liverpool will want a quick return on investment in Bradley Barcola.

The fleet-footed winger has all the ingredients to become a fan favourite given his pace and directness. Just 24, his prime years are ahead of him, but he’s already reached the Champions League, having won the competition twice with PSG. 39 goals and 37 assists across 152 games for the Parisian outfit is pretty decent too.

PSG (Ferran Torres)

Known for his exceptional off-the-ball movement and penalty box instincts, Ferran Torres has clocked up the miles. At Manchester City, he was a Champions League runner-up, but he lit up Barcelona, winning three La Liga titles.

It was at Barca where he netted 65 times in 207 appearances, and given his ability, he will be expected to hit the ground running with PSG.

TeamOdds
Barcelona5.00
Arsenal6.50
Bayern Munich6.50
PSG6.50
Real Madrid8.00

Barcelona are currently tracking as the favourites at 5.00, which is slightly baffling given it has been over a decade since they last hoisted the trophy.

Lamine Yamal, of course, is the X-factor with his ability to breeze past defenders, while Raphinha has an eye for goal, popping up with timely moments.

You can throw a blanket over the other contenders. Arsenal (6.50), of course, are still desperate to break their Champions League duck. Their agonising defeat in last season’s showpiece was just their second visit to the Final in 20 years. Let’s not forget the Gunners cantered through the League phase last term, winning all eight matches, conceding just four goals.

Bayern Munich, also at 6.50, will be looking to go further this season after falling short to PSG in the semi-finals. At their imperious best, Bayern can blow most teams off the park with their dizzying style, and Kane was prolific too last term, plundering 14 goals.

Interestingly, Real Madrid are slightly further adrift at 8.00. While Mourinho’s pugnacious style has attracted criticism from his detractors, the Portuguese tactician has plenty of pedigree in the competition. He lifted the title twice, first with Porto in 2003/04, and then Inter Milan in 2009/10 to cap a stunning treble, so write Real off at your peril.

Selected Champions League 26/27 Top Scorer Odds

Aside from the main outright winner market, there are other Champions League specials floating about, including the top scorer line. Here are the up-to-date prices available at respected football betting operator Betpanda.io.

PlayerClubOdds
Kylian MbappeReal Madrid6.00
Erling HaalandManchester City6.60
Harry KaneBayern Munich7.40
Ferran TorresPSG11.00
Ousmane DembelePSG11.00
RaphinhaBarcelona12.00

Mbappe is the marginal favourite at 6.00, given his exploits last season, when he crashed home 15 goals to be crowned top scorer.

The French striker boasts devastating pace, and when he has the bit between his teeth, he is simply unstoppable.

Erling Haaland comes in just behind at 6.60, and he will look to close the gap to Cristiano Ronaldo (141), who tops the all-time scorer list. The Norwegian superstar has everything in his locker, and he will want to improve on his return of eight goals from last term.

Ousmane Dembele, meanwhile, at 11.00, gives PSG plenty of dynamism, and he weighed in with eight strikes last term. Although his tally was surpassed by team-mate Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (10), Dembele thrives on the biggest stage.

What is intriguing, however, is that Yamal is a slight longshot at 22.00 in the market. The mercurial Spaniard, who has been repeatedly spoken of in the same breath as Barcelona legend Lionel Messi, chipped in with six goals last season, and he can turn games on their head single-handedly.

Champions League Prediction: PSG to Win @6.50

PSG, by the looks of things, appear to be the complete package, and they are aiming to create history.

Although Arsenal have set their sights on lifting a trophy that has eluded them for so long, PSG hold the special codes.

Under Luis Enrique, PSG’s fluid style gives them attacking freedom, and that was reflected by the fact they netted 45 goals last season, which was more than any other side.

They topped the possession stats, and they put in the hard yards too, recovering 664 balls, so they aren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves.

Although the likes of Arsenal and Bayern Munich will feel like they are getting closer, PSG have built solid foundations. Although their price of 6.50 equates to an implied probability of 15.4%, PSG could extend their dynasty.
