F1 Regulation Changes and 2026 Season Teams

The 2026 Formula 1 season will be historic. Before it starts, the sport is going through the biggest overhaul in its modern era. Drivers will line up not only with brand new cars, there are also sporting and financial Formula 1 regulation changes. This season also brings one new team, Cadillac, while the number of drivers increases from 20 to 22.

Below is a closer look at all the key F1 regulation changes and an overview of every team on the 2026 Formula 1 grid.

Most of the adjustments ahead of the 2026 Formula 1 season are technical regulations, but there are also updates to the sporting and financial regulations. Below are all the most important changes that come into force from the start of the 2026 campaign.

In 2026 Formula 1 drivers will race with completely new cars. That is the biggest change before this season. The 2026 car rules have been known for some time, and teams have been preparing for several years.

The F1 regulation changes have been introduced with the goal that cars would run roughly 50% on sustainable fuels and 50% on electricity.

Main technical F1 regulations changes:

• MGU-H (Motor Generator Unit – Heat) is removed.
• MGU-K (Motor Generator Unit – Kinetic) output is increased to 350 kW from 120 kW.
• The internal combustion engine (ICE) is reduced from upwards of 550 kW to 400 kW.
• The maximum wheelbase is reduced by 20 cm.
• The car’s width is 10 cm narrower.
• The front tires are 2.5 cm narrower and the rear tires are 3 cm narrower.
• The minimum weight drops from 800 kg in 2025 to 768 kg.

Drag Reduction System (DRS) disappears from the cars and is replaced by a new feature called Overtake Mode. Drivers will be able to recharge an additional 0.5 MJ and create an extra electrical power profile that helps them maintain higher speed for a longer period. A Boost Mode function is also introduced.

Drivers will need to adapt to the F1 rule changes, because both the cars and the way they are used will change. We can expect to see different overtaking maneuvers and new track zones. All of this must be considered when betting on Formula 1, especially at the start of the season, when more surprises and accidents than usual are expected.

Some of the key changes in the sporting regulations:

• Car liveries – at least 55% of the surface area when viewed from the side and from above must be covered by painted or stickered livery.
• Cooling vests – driver cooling vests will be mandatory when the FIA declares a heat hazard during a race weekend.
• Monaco Grand Prix – the requirement to run a minimum two stop strategy has been dropped.

Main financial regulations changes:

• Cost cap – increased from 135 million to 215 million dollars.
• Power unit cost cap – increased from 95 million to 130 million dollars.

Driver wages, the compensation of the three highest paid team members, marketing, travel and hospitality expenses, together with infrastructure investments, remain costs that are not included in the cost cap.

In 2026 Formula 1 will feature 11 teams and 22 drivers. Compared to last season, the driver line up is unchanged apart from Yuki Tsunoda, who is replaced by Arvid Lindblad moving up from Formula 2. Below is the full list of teams and their drivers.

For the first time since 2016, when Haas joined Formula 1, a new team arrives on the grid. Cadillac will make its debut in 2026. The team will partner with Ferrari and from 2029 will use its own power unit. 

Cadillac will field two well known, experienced drivers: Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas. Last year Sergio Perez did not race, as he mutually agreed to end his contract with Red Bull Racing after the 2024 season. Valtteri Bottas spent last year as Mercedes reserve driver. 

Racing Bulls welcome Formula 1 debutant Arvid Lindblad. The 18-year-old has been part of the Red Bull Junior Team since 2021. He replaces Isack Hadjar at Racing Bulls. The Frenchman moves up to the main Red Bull Racing team, where he takes the seat of Japanese driver Yuki Tsunoda. 

At the start of the season Racing Bulls will be the only team with a rookie F1 driver. All the other teams retain the same line ups that finished last season. Expectations for Racing Bulls are modest. It is a team that primarily gives chances to young drivers and prepares them for the main outfit. 

Mercedes last won the Formula 1 world championship in 2021. Their era of dominance started in 2014. This year the team is the main favourite to win the championship, and their driver George Russell has the shortest odds to become world champion. 

The last few seasons have not been the most successful for Mercedes, but with their experience the engineers have had time to prepare a strong car under the new regulations. George Russell showed a solid level last year and it will be interesting to see whether he can justify the status of favourite. 

Ferrari last won the Formula 1 championship in 2008. Since then, ambitions have been high, but the title has remained out of reach. Last season the legendary Lewis Hamilton joined the team, but even that was not enough to deliver a breakthrough. Ferrari finished fourth in the standings with 398 points.

This year Ferrari are again listed among the favourites. The strong Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc pairing is one of the main reasons why Ferrari have a realistic chance to become champions again after an 18-year gap.

The last two seasons have been outstanding for McLaren. In 2024 they managed to win the championship. It was their first title since 1998.

Last year was outright domination. In the final standings McLaren almost doubled the points of second placed Mercedes, 833 against 469. McLaren driver Lando Norris became world champion for the first time. 

Repeating that success in 2026 will be extremely difficult. If last year the competition was not very strong, this season starts with completely new cars and that is a major challenge for McLaren.

The prediction is that Lando Norris will not defend his title. Since 2014 there has been only one case where the reigning champion did not defend the title, when Nico Rosberg won in 2016 and Lewis Hamilton took back the crown in 2017. 

The biggest strength of the team is the driver pairing. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were outstanding last season, and it will be very interesting to see how they perform in the new cars.

The 2026 Formula 1 season promises a lot of new challenges and intrigue. At the start of the year a lot of chaos is possible.

It will take at least a few rounds before the main contenders clearly emerge. Drivers will debut in new machinery, so more attention should go to the veterans who have already gone through technical F1 regulation changes in the past.

Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren are the main favourites, and these are the teams that deserve most of the focus. Ferrari and McLaren stand out because they have two top tier drivers each.

Mercedes has George Russell, who is considered the favourite, but next to him is 19-year-old Kimi Antonelli, which raises some questions. The Italian is extremely talented, but it remains to be seen how he will handle the pressure and help his teammate in the title fight.
