A-League Men Season Overview 2026-27
The A-League Men kicks off on Friday 16 October, and it’s shaping up as one of the tightest title races in years. Newcastle are the reigning premiers, Auckland are the reigning champions and Sydney were beaten Grand Finalists. All three are joint favorites at 9/2 (5.50), but I’m only backing one of them.
I’ve gone through every squad, pulling out what’s changed over the off-season and where the value sits in the market. Below you’ll find the key dates, a look back at last season, the full odds and my best bets for 2026/27.

What’s New in 2026/27 A-League Men Season
Six clubs head into the season with a new or newly confirmed head coach, including the champions.
| Club | Head coach |
|---|---|
| Adelaide United | Airton Andrioli |
| Auckland FC | Pedro Moreira (new) |
| Brisbane Roar | Michael Valkanis |
| Central Coast Mariners | John Hutchinson (new) |
| Macarthur FC | Sasa Ognenovski (new) |
| Melbourne City | Aurelio Vidmar |
| Melbourne Victory | Giovanni Savarese (new) |
| Newcastle Jets | Mark Milligan |
| Perth Glory | Adam Griffiths |
| Sydney FC | Patrick Kisnorbo |
| Wellington Phoenix | Chris Greenacre (made permanent) |
| Western Sydney Wanderers | Ufuk Talay (new) |
Auckland lost their title-winning coach when Steve Corica’s move to Yokohama F. Marinos was announced in May. Portuguese coach Pedro Moreira has taken over, and he’s also had to deal with Guillermo May, Jesse Randall and Jake Girdwood-Reich all leaving.
The good news for Auckland fans is that Sam Cosgrove is staying put after sharing last season’s Golden Boot, plus they’ve picked up Lachlan Bayliss from Newcastle.
Newcastle have been gutted. Captain Kosta Grozos and Ben Gibson have gone to Macarthur, Bayliss is in Auckland, and Clayton Taylor, Lachlan Rose and Young Footballer of the Year Eli Adams have all headed overseas. Joe Lolley and Nikos Vergos are decent replacements, but that’s a huge amount of goals and leadership walking out the door.
Sydney lost Lolley and Paul Okon-Engstler, and they’ve done well to replace them. Takahiro Sekine arrives from Urawa Red Diamonds, Oriola Sunday is on loan from Omiya Ardija, Jacob Farrell is on loan from Portsmouth and James Overy has come home from Manchester United’s academy.
Melbourne City have only made a handful of signings, but they’re good ones. Socceroo Awer Mabil, Emiliano Marcondes and Costa Rica defender Julio Cascante all walk straight into the starting XI.

Victory have lost Juan Mata, which is a massive blow given he won the Johnny Warren Medal last season. New coach Giovanni Savarese has brought in Tom Lockyer, Philipp Ziereis and May, and Victory also play South Melbourne in the Australia Cup Final on 10 October.
Macarthur have torn it up and started again. Apostolos Stamatelopoulos, Musa Toure, Ryan Fraser, Grozos and Gibson are all in, and Sasa Ognenovski was only appointed on 20 August.
Elsewhere, Nicolas Milanovic is back at Western Sydney after a season at Aberdeen. Wellington have signed Rafael Duran to replace 10-goal striker Ifeanyi Eze, and Perth have Calem Nieuwenhof on loan from Hearts.

The A-League Favorites – Sydney, Auckland and Newcastle
Sydney had the tightest defense in the league last season, conceding just 25 goals in 26 games. Harrison Devenish-Meares kept 11 clean sheets and was named Goalkeeper of the Year.
I’m tipping Sydney to win the 2026/27 A-League.
Kisnorbo only took over in March, and he had them in the Grand Final in his eighth game in charge. This time around he’s had a full pre-season with the group, and their recruitment has been sharp.
Sekine has played over 400 games for Urawa and won two AFC Champions League titles, while Farrell already has two A-League Championships on his CV from his time at Central Coast.
With that said, there is one catch. Devenish-Meares needed three surgeries on a vein problem in his arm over the off-season and still hadn’t resumed full training as of mid-August. Gus Hoefsloot has been filling in, and if Devenish-Meares isn’t right for Round 1, it takes some of the shine off Sydney’s case.
Goals are my worry. Sydney only scored 33 last season, and Lolley took 36 goals in 115 games for the club with him to Newcastle. Victor Campuzano is set to miss the whole season after rupturing his ACL, so a lot rides on Sunday, who’s taken over the No 9 shirt.
Tiago Quintal and Al Hassan Toure are the other options up top. They also lost 2-0 to Victory in the Australia Cup semi-final earlier this month, which wasn’t ideal.
Still, I’ll take 9/2 on the best defensive side in the competition.
Auckland are the best-run club in the league, and it’s no surprise they’re 16/5 (4.20) favorites to win the regular season. But I just think there’s been too much change for them to defend their title.
A new coach, plus May, Randall and club Player of the Season Louis Verstraete all leaving, is a lot to absorb. I’d rather see how Moreira’s side is going by Christmas before backing them.
Newcastle are the team I’m staying away from.
They were comfortably the best side over the regular season, but the squad that did it has been dismantled.
Taylor, Rose and Adams scored 25 of their 55 league goals between them, and all three have left. So have Grozos and Bayliss. Throw in the Champions League Elite travel and a home ground that isn’t always available early in the season, and 9/2 looks way too short.
The A-League Chasing Pack
Melbourne City are my next best bet. They finished sixth and went out on penalties in Auckland, but their recruitment has been as good as anyone’s outside Sydney. Mabil, Marcondes and Cascante all bring serious experience from Europe and MLS. If Mabil gets picked for the Asian Cup it could hurt them, but 5/1 is a fair price.
Victory are tough to get a read on. Losing Mata hurts – he won the Johnny Warren Medal and Playmaker of the Year last season. Lockyer and May are proven performers, and winning the Australia Cup could give Savarese’s side some early momentum. I’m still happy to leave them alone at 5/1.
Macarthur are the wildcard. Stamatelopoulos scored 17 goals in 25 games for Newcastle in 2023/24, and Toure and Fraser add plenty of quality. But a brand-new squad and a coach who was appointed eight weeks out from the season is a lot to back at 8/1. I’d give them a couple of months to gel first.

Adelaide are my value play. They finished second last season, yet five of the teams below them are shorter in the market. There are some concerns.
Luka Jovanovic, who shared the Golden Boot with Cosgrove, has gone to the San Jose Earthquakes, and getting knocked out of the Australia Cup by South Melbourne wasn’t a great look. But Andrioli is in his second season, Craig Goodwin is still captain, and Ryan White, Ethan Alagich and Panagiotis Kikianis are all still at the club. I think 6/4 for them to make the top six is too big.
Western Sydney should be better under Talay now that Milanovic is back, but they finished dead last. 12/1 is too short.
Wellington, Perth, Brisbane and Central Coast are the long shots. The Mariners are 2/1 (3.00) favorites for the wooden spoon after another youth-heavy rebuild, and that’s the only market I’d be looking at for them.
My A-League 2026/27 Predictions
Here are my main picks at online sports betting sites, including the team I’m backing for the title and the one I’d avoid.
Grand Final Winner – Sydney
Sydney had the best defense in the league, made the Grand Final under Kisnorbo and have strengthened over the off-season.
A-League Grand Final prediction: Sydney FC at 9/2 (5.50)
My Value Play – Adelaide Top Six
Adelaide finished second last season and are still only 6/4 to make the finals.
A-League value prediction: Adelaide United to finish in the top six at 6/4 (2.50)
Team to Avoid – Newcastle
The premiers have lost their captain and three of their top scorers, and they’ve got Champions League Elite games to juggle.
Avoid: Newcastle Jets at 9/2 (5.50)
A-League Betting Trends to Look Out For
For football punters, the favorites that deliver tend to do it over 26 rounds rather than in the finals. The value is in the top-six market, as a fifth or sixth-place finish still gives a team a real shot at the title.
- Premiers keep missing out – the last two premiers, Auckland in 2024/25 and Newcastle in 2025/26, both came up short in the finals
- You don’t need a top-two finish – Auckland won the title from third last season, and Sydney reached the Grand Final from fifth
- Title defenses can go wrong – Melbourne City were defending champions last season and finished sixth, going out in the elimination final
A-League Men 2026/27 Key Dates and Format
The top two on the table at the end of the regular season go straight through to the two-legged semi-finals. Third through sixth play one-off elimination finals to join them.

What 2025/26 A-League Men Season Told Us
Newcastle ran away with the regular season. They finished on 48 points, five clear of Adelaide, and Mark Milligan picked up Coach of the Year in his first season in charge. Adelaide were second, Auckland third, Melbourne Victory fourth and Sydney fifth.
The finals weren’t quite so straight forward, though.
Auckland needed penalties to get past Melbourne City in the elimination final, then thumped Adelaide 4-1 on aggregate in the semis. Sydney went to Victory and won 1-0, before knocking out the Jets on penalties after a 2-2 aggregate draw.
That set up the first Grand Final ever played in New Zealand. Cameron Howieson scored the only goal in front of 28,374 at Go Media Stadium and picked up the Joe Marston Medal for his troubles.
It’s now two years in a row that the premiers have come up short in the finals. Auckland finished top in 2024/25, only for Melbourne City to win the title.
At the other end of the ladder, Western Sydney finished last on 21 points, while Brisbane went 12 games without a win.
A-League 2026/27 Betting Summary
Here’s a quick overview of my three main A-League 2026/27 betting picks.
| Prediction | Odds | Main supporting factor | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney to win the Grand Final | 9/2 (5.50) | Best defense in the league and a full pre-season under Kisnorbo | Devenish-Meares’ fitness, and goals without Lolley and Campuzano |
| Adelaide to finish top six | 6/4 (2.50) | Finished second last season with most of the core still there | Replacing Jovanovic’s goals |
| Avoid Newcastle | 9/2 (5.50) | Lost their captain and 25 league goals | Milligan got plenty out of this group last season |
My Sydney bet is the one I’m most confident in. Their defense has already shown what it can do, and if Devenish-Meares is fit and Sunday gets on a roll, they’ll take some stopping.
The Adelaide bet is riskier. Jovanovic scored 11 league goals and they haven’t signed a like-for-like replacement, so I’d keep the stake small on this one.
As for Newcastle, it’s the players who’ve left that worry me, and I rate Milligan highly. If anyone can rebuild on the run, it’s him.
Prices can move quickly in the lead-up to the season, and the Australia Cup Final on 10 October could shift Victory’s odds. Make sure you check the latest prices again before placing a bet.
