Spanish La Liga Season Overview 2026/27

The 2026/27 La Liga season begins on 15 August 2026 and concludes on 30 May 2027.

Barcelona enter as champions for the second year in a row, while Real Madrid begin another José Mourinho era after making major changes to both their coaching staff and squad.

The promoted group also carries more history than usual.

Racing Santander return after 14 years away, while Deportivo La Coruña and Málaga are back in the Spanish top flight following eight-season absences.

La Liga does not use a relegation play-off.

The bottom three teams are relegated directly to La Liga Hypermotion.

After the 2025/26 season, Real Oviedo, Girona and Mallorca were relegated and replaced by Racing Santander, Deportivo La Coruña and Málaga.

The first matches will be played on 15 August, but the opening round will not be completed until 27 August.

Fixtures involving clubs with players who reached the latter stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup were moved to give those squads additional recovery time.

The arrangement creates an unusual sequence.

Real Madrid will visit Espanyol on matchday two before hosting Real Sociedad in their postponed opener on 26 August.

Barcelona will play away to Elche on 23 August before facing Athletic Club in their matchday-one fixture four days later.

La Liga Matchday 1 Fixtures

Later matchdays currently show scheduled dates rather than final kick-off times.

Television selections and European fixtures can still lead to changes.

Twenty clubs will compete in Spain’s top division.

Racing return as La Liga Hypermotion champions after 14 years outside the top flight.

They finished with 82 points and scored 90 goals, the highest total recorded in the modern era of the competition.

That record gives their promotion more substance than a short play-off run.

Racing secured first place across a full 42-game season and will begin their return at home against Villarreal.

Deportivo earned the second automatic promotion place with 77 points from 22 wins, 11 draws and nine defeats.

They confirmed their return by beating Real Valladolid 2-0 away from home on the penultimate matchday.

The club last played in La Liga in 2017/18 and subsequently fell as far as Spain’s third tier.

Deportivo’s return is particularly notable because they are not simply former top-flight regulars: they won La Liga in 2000 and spent 20 consecutive seasons in the division between 1991 and 2011.

Promotion also restores the Galician derby against Celta, which has been absent from La Liga since Deportivo’s previous relegation.

Málaga claimed the final promotion place through the play-offs after finishing fourth in La Liga Hypermotion with 73 points.

They drew the first leg of the final 0-0 against Almería before winning the return match 2-1 away from home.

The result ended Málaga’s eight-season absence and secured the club’s 18th campaign in the Spanish top division.

Their first game back will be away to Atlético Madrid.

Real Oviedo, Girona and Mallorca were relegated at the end of the 2025/26 season.

Oviedo had already gone down before the final round, while Girona were unable to escape the bottom three after drawing 1-1 with Elche.

Mallorca beat Oviedo 3-0 but still finished below Osasuna and Levante on the head-to-head tiebreaker after all three clubs ended with 42 points.

Barcelona won their 29th Spanish league title and retained the trophy under Hansi Flick.

The championship was secured with a 2-0 victory over Real Madrid on 10 May, making it the first time Barcelona had clinched La Liga by winning an El Clásico match.

Flick has now won the league in each of his first two seasons in charge.

Real Madrid finished second, although Kylian Mbappé ended the campaign as the division’s leading scorer with 25 goals.

Real Betis took fifth place and qualified for the UEFA Champions League, while Celta and Getafe secured Europa League and Conference League places respectively.

Barcelona therefore begin the new season with the opportunity to win a third consecutive championship, while Madrid are attempting to respond after finishing behind their rivals in successive campaigns.

José Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid is the biggest coaching appointment of the summer, but several other clubs will also begin the season under new management.

Mourinho has signed a three-year contract running until 30 June 2029.

His first spell at Real Madrid lasted from 2010 to 2013 and included the 2011/12 La Liga title.

The circumstances are different this time.

Mourinho inherits a squad built around Kylian Mbappé but supplemented by several experienced summer additions.

With Madrid coming off another second-place finish, his return will be judged against immediate domestic expectations rather than treated as a patient rebuilding project.

Athletic Club appointed former Borussia Dortmund coach Edin Terzić until June 2028.

He won the DFB-Pokal in 2021 and led Dortmund to the 2024 UEFA Champions League final.

Terzić takes over a club with a clearly defined recruitment identity and a squad accustomed to competing for European places.

His first scheduled league fixture is one of the most difficult possible assignments: Barcelona away on 27 August.

Osasuna have handed Luis Miguel Ramis a contract until 2028, while Villarreal appointed former Rayo Vallecano coach Iñigo Pérez until June 2029.

Elche will be led by Martín Anselmi.

His team showed an emphasis on intense pressing and controlling possession during its opening pre-season match.

The first El Clásico will take place in Barcelona on 25 October. Real Madrid host the return meeting on 9 May 2027, with only three matchdays remaining after that weekend.

Barcelona are also scheduled to face Atlético on the weekend of 7–8 November before hosting the reverse fixture on 6–7 February.

Exact kick-off times for these matches will be announced later.

Beyond the traditional headline games, the return of Deportivo creates the first top-flight Galician derbies against Celta since the 2017/18 season.

The list remains subject to change because clubs can continue registering players until 1 September.

The following moves are among the most significant deals officially completed by the leading teams as of 31 July.

Barcelona have added Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United and Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund.

Both forwards have signed contracts until 2031.

Gordon has primarily played from the left but can also operate centrally, while Adeyemi provides another option across the front line.

Their arrival coincides with Robert Lewandowski’s move to Chicago Fire.

The Polish striker leaves after scoring 120 goals during four seasons with Barcelona.

Gordon and Adeyemi give Flick more speed, movement and flexibility, but neither is a direct replacement for the penalty-area role Lewandowski occupied.

Barcelona still appear to have one of the deepest attacking groups in Spain, although the distribution of minutes and goals through the middle remains an early-season question.

Real Madrid have strengthened both full-back positions by signing Marc Cucurella from Chelsea and Denzel Dumfries from Inter.

Ibrahima Konaté adds another established centre-back, while Bernardo Silva provides experience and creativity in midfield.

The four additions give Mourinho more options without changing the central reference point of the attack.

Madrid already had the previous season’s leading scorer in Mbappé; the summer recruitment has concentrated more heavily on the structure around him.

Atlético have signed defensive midfielder Morten Hjulmand from Sporting CP, Kang-in Lee from Paris Saint-Germain and left-back Alejandro Grimaldo from Bayer Leverkusen.

Lee can play as an attacking midfielder or from either wing, while Hjulmand adds another ball-winning and distribution option in central midfield.

Antoine Griezmann has moved in the opposite direction, joining Orlando City.

He leaves Atlético as the club’s all-time leading scorer, having scored 212 goals.

The incoming players improve several areas, but Griezmann’s departure creates a separate issue.

Atlético must replace not only his goals but also his influence between midfield and attack.

The new season has an unusual opening, with matchday one spread across 13 days and two of the title contenders playing their second fixture before their first.

Once the delayed games are completed, the schedule returns to a more familiar rhythm.

Barcelona begin with the strongest recent domestic record, Real Madrid have chosen significant change, and Atlético are reshaping their attack after losing a defining player.

Further transfers may still alter that picture before the registration window closes.

At the other end of the table, Racing, Deportivo and Málaga return with substantial top-flight history, but their current squads will be judged independently of their past achievements.

Racing arrive with the strongest second-tier record, Deportivo went up automatically, and Málaga enter after coming through the promotion play-offs.
