Liga Portugal 2026/27 Overview and Betting Prediction

FC Porto entered the 2026/27 Liga Portugal season as defending champions after Francesco Farioli led them back to the top of Portuguese football in his first campaign in charge.

Porto finished 2025/26 with 88 points, six ahead of Sporting CP and eight clear of Benfica.

Sporting were second, while Benfica completed the entire league season without a defeat but still finished third after drawing 11 of their 34 matches.

The opening weekend produced different starts for the three title contenders.

Porto beat Alverca 2-0 at the Estádio do Dragão, while Sporting gave up a two-goal lead in a 2-2 draw at Estrela Amadora. Benfica were also held 2-2 at home by newly promoted Académico de Viseu.

Liga Portugal remains an 18-team competition, with each club playing 34 matches.

Marítimo return to the top flight after winning Liga Portugal 2 with 66 points.

Académico de Viseu finished second on 59 and earned the other automatic promotion place.

They replace Tondela and AFS, who occupied the two automatic relegation positions last season.

Casa Pia finished 16th but survived the playoff after a 0-0 first leg against Torreense, winning the return match 2-0 at home.

The new season started on 7 August and the final round is scheduled for 16 May 2027.

Portugal’s summer registration period remains open until 23:59 on 4 September, meaning squads can still change during the opening weeks of the campaign.

Benfica are the only member of Portugal’s traditional big three to start the season with a new head coach.

Marco Silva replaced José Mourinho and signed a contract through 2028, with an option for one additional season.

Rui Borges remains at Sporting after extending his contract until 2028.

He took charge midway through 2024/25 and immediately led the club to a Liga Portugal and Taça de Portugal double.

Porto continue with Farioli for a second season.

The first meetings between Portugal’s three main title contenders are spread across the opening half of the season.

These are the round dates listed in the official Liga Portugal calendar and can still be adjusted when individual match schedules and broadcast selections are confirmed.

The return Lisbon derby is particularly well placed to influence the title race, with Sporting hosting Benfica on the penultimate weekend.

Sporting have undergone the biggest rebuild of the three leading contenders.

Geovany Quenda completed his move to Chelsea, captain Morten Hjulmand joined Atlético Madrid, Francisco Trincão moved to Al-Ahli and Hidemasa Morita left for Hull City.

Those four players had made a combined 384 Primeira Liga appearances for Sporting.

The departures continued after the season had already started. Ousmane Diomande completed a move to Nottingham Forest on 11 August, removing another established player from Rui Borges’ defence.

Sporting have reinvested. Rodrigo Zalazar joined from Braga after producing 16 goals and five assists in Liga Portugal last season, while Sergi Altimira arrived from Real Betis and Ibrahima Ba was signed from Famalicão.

Benfica’s summer has combined a coaching change with additions in several positions.

Jhon Durán joined on loan from Al-Nassr, Clément Lenglet strengthened the defence and Jakub Kamiński was added to the wide attacking options.

Porto have made fewer changes to the core of last season’s team.

Jakub Kiwior’s loan from Arsenal was converted into a permanent transfer, while André Silva returned to his former club.

The striker scored on his first Liga Portugal appearance of the new season against Alverca.

Porto have earned their position as favourites. They won 28 of 34 league matches last season, lost only twice and conceded 18 goals, the best defensive record in the division.

Benfica at 3.25 are harder to assess.

Going unbeaten across 34 matches was an exceptional achievement, but their 23 wins were five fewer than Porto managed.

The issue was not avoiding defeats; it was turning enough of those 11 draws into victories. Marco Silva now inherits that problem while introducing a new coaching setup.

Sporting’s 3.40 reflects a different type of uncertainty.

They finished above Benfica last season and retain Rui Borges, but no other member of the top three has lost as many established players this summer.

Luis Javier Suárez is the standout alternative to the short-priced Pavlidis.

The Colombian won the 2025/26 Liga Portugal scoring title with 28 goals in 32 appearances. He also provided six assists.

However, Sporting’s attacking setup is no longer identical to the one in which Suárez produced those numbers. Trincão, who led Sporting with 11 league assists last season, is among the departures.

There is also more competition for the central attacking role. Fotis Ioannidis started the opening league match against Estrela Amadora, scored Sporting’s second goal and was replaced by Suárez around the hour mark.

One match is not enough to establish a season-long hierarchy, but it adds another variable to a market based heavily on playing time.

Suárez at 6.50 is worth monitoring, but there is not enough certainty around his role to make it a second season-long selection at this stage.

Porto deserve to start as favourites. Sporting’s appeal comes from the difference between the two prices.

Sporting finished last season with 25 wins, seven draws and two defeats.

Their 89 goals were the highest total in Liga Portugal, while only Porto conceded fewer than Sporting’s 24.

They finished only six points behind Porto despite losing just twice and producing the league’s strongest attack.

Sporting remained in the domestic title race while reaching the Champions League quarter-finals, their best UEFA Champions League campaign to date.

The summer rebuild is the main risk.

Sporting have lost important players from every line of the team, and Diomande’s move to Nottingham Forest added another significant departure after the league had already begun.

The scale of those changes makes it harder to project last season’s level directly into 2026/27.

That risk has to be weighed against the price.

Sporting at 3.40 carry a raw implied probability of approximately 29.4%, compared with around 46.5% for Porto at 2.15.

Opta’s pre-season model also placed Sporting first at 35.3%, ahead of Benfica at 32.8% and Porto at 21.0%, although the projection is better treated as supporting context than as a standalone reason for the selection.

Porto offer greater continuity, but that advantage is already reflected in the price.

Sporting’s 3.40 provides more room for the uncertainty created by their summer rebuild.
