2026 FIFA World Cup Dark Horses

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, also known as FIFA World Cup 26, will be the 23rd edition of the tournament. Held every four years, it features men’s national teams from member associations of FIFA. The competition is scheduled to run from June 11 to July 19, 2026. Matches will be hosted across sixteen cities, with eleven in the United States, three in Mexico, and two in Canada.

In this article we are focusing on the teams who can exceed the expectations and go further than most of us think. They do not necessarily have the best chances to win the World Cup, but definitely are worth watching and can beat or eliminate teams while being World Cup dark horses.

Despite making it to the 2022 World Cup semi-finals Morocco are once again not being rated by the bookies and experts and are out of the top 10 potential winners list. The African giants had a historic run and went undefeated in the group stage beating the likes of Belgium fairly comfortably 2-0.

Their strict defending brilliance continued in the knockout stages as they eliminated Spain in the penalty shoot out after finishing the game 0-0. Later, Morocco kicked out another favourite after keeping the clean sheet again and eliminating Portugal 1-0.

Morocco looked perfectly in the qualification for this year’s World Cup edition. They were in the group with Zambia, Tanzania, Niger and Congo winning all 8 matches while scoring 22 goals and conceding just 2.

On paper the team’s level has not decreased, although the likes of H.Zyiech, R.Saiss and few others do not play top football anymore. Yet, the squad will be filled up with young new talented players such as B.Diaz (Real Madrid), E. Ben Seghir (Leverkusen), N.El Aynoui (Roma), A.Adli (Bournemouth).

Obviously, the main figure remains A.Hakimi, who continues his success with PSG, while the attacking phase will be orchestrated by Real’s B.Diaz who was nominated as AFCON’s 2025 player of the tournament.

Moreover, Morocco are in group C along with Brazil, Scotland and Haiti so a knock out stages are more than possibility and first or the second place would mean a quarterfinal fixture against Netherlands, Japan, Sweden or Tunisia and all of these teams are certainly beatable for them.

In the World Cup 2022 Japan pulled off one of the biggest surprises of the group stages in the competition’s history. The Asian side topped their group by beating Germany and Spain 2-1. Unfortunately their run was cut short in round of 16 as they were defeated on penalties by Croatia, who later became the winners of 3rd place.

In this year’s World Cup they have an easier group on paper alongside Netherlands, Tunisia and Sweden. While both Sweden and Tunisia qualified with the help of extra matches, Japan topped their qualification group with 7 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss.

While some of the older players such as M.Yoshida and Y.Nagatomo are unlikely to feature or have an important role, the team now has recently emerged goalkeeper in Z.Suzuki (Parma) and the likes of H.Ito (Bayern Munich) and D.Kamada (Crystal Palace) has progressed.

According to top sports bookies this team has only around 67/1 chances to win the tournament, which is very disrespectful considering the fact that the likes of the USA are given more chances.

Ecuador’s main goal for this World Cup is to qualify from the group stage as they have failed to make it from the group in 2022 versus Netherlands, Senegal and Qatar. Although, this team has not reached anything significant in this tournament, now their squad looks way better and has more potential.

Firstly, they have one of the most valued defenses with W.Pacho (PSG), P.Hincapie (Arsenal) and J.Ordonez (Club Brugge) at the centre. Their holding midfielder will be Chelsea’s man M.Caicedo so this team is capable of taking the points away from anyone.

Ecuador finished 2nd in the qualification stage only behind Argentina beating them in the final game which allowed them to finish above all the other teams who were rated higher than them. Moreover, they were the team with the least amount of losses finishing the stage with 8 wins, 8 draws and only two loses while Argentina lost 4 times and Brazil 6 times.

Although they are in the group with Germany, Ivory Coast and Curacao, we are backing them to qualify to the knock out stages. If anything this team can collect a certain amount of points which will be enough to qualify from the 3rd place in the group.

Ecuador’s chances to win the World Cup are around 101/1, but let’s wait for them to do all the talking as we are sure that Germany and Ivory Coast won’t sleep too well before the fixtures against this team.

Although in this article we have focused on only these three participating teams, the World Cup sometimes is not a predictable football spectacle and any team in 90 minutes of football can surprise us and be FIFA World Cup dark horses.

Yet, we are backing Morocco, Japan and Ecuador to defy the odds and we will be watching them closely just for our pleasure or the betting opportunities.
