UEFA Champions League Prediction: Atalanta – Arsenal (19-09-2024)

19 September Atalanta and Arsenal play their first game of the season in the UEFA Champions League. The new format of the UEFA Champions League promises a lot of intrigue.

With a different opponent in each round and no time to make up for it in the regular season, there’s no need to preserve. Atalanta had a disappointing start to the season, so let’s look at what we can expect from them against Arsenal.

Arsenal started the season on a pretty solid note, with two wins and a draw in the English Premier League. They have a tough London derby against Tottenham before heading to Bergamo.

However, this year’s Arsenal squad has enough players to perform at the highest level in the domestic championship and the UEFA Champions League.

The first opponent is certainly not the strongest, and although the match is away, Arsenal is considered by the football bookmakers to be quite a clear favourite here.

Atalanta qualified for the UEFA Champions League as winners of the UEFA European Cup but had a difficult start to the 2024-25 season. First, they suffered two defeats in the friendly games, one draw and a 0-2 UEFA Super Cup defeat against Real Madrid on 14 August.

Although the Serie A team had a very good first game, beating Lecce 4-0, it suffered two defeats, 1-2 against Torino and 0-4 against Inter Milan.

It will be very difficult to perform with such level of football in the UEFA Champions League, especially against teams like Arsenal. It is worth acknowledging that they are clubs of a different level and Atalanta’s only advantage is their home ground.

However, with the change in the format of the UEFA Champions League, we can expect many more victories from the away teams this year, as we will no longer be going into the game with the idea that we will be at home in the worst-case scenario.

Bergamo have problems with their defence, while Arsenal bring an impressive attack. Arsenal can score two goals @ 1.75, but it’s hard to believe that they won’t win the game after scoring two goals. For this reason, we’ll go for a straight away win.
