With favorable NBA Rookie of the Year odds, Chet Holmgren was one of the favorites to lift the 2023 NBA Rookie of the Year award. However, the big man suffered an injury before his NBA debut and missed all of last year, so he is playing as a rookie this year.

The Frenchman Victor Wembanyama probably doesn’t need much mentioning – the previous year, we saw many NBA teams trying to increase their chances of getting their first call-up.

Although the Frenchman has made a strong start in the NBA and is currently the frontrunner for the NBA Rookie of the Year award, with odds of 1.65 (0.65/1; -154) given by basketball bookmakers, Chet Holmgren is proving to be a much more formidable competitor than expected, with odds of 1.94 (0.94/1; -106).

Before the kick-off of the 2023-24 NBA season, the three most talked-about players making their debuts in the league were Holmgren, Wembanyama, and Scoot Henderson, who played in the NBA G-League last season.

He was drafted third overall by the Trail Blazers, who also started the rebuilding process by trading Damian Lillard.

Henderson stood out among the other young players for his physical attributes, and the odds of him lifting the NBA Rookie of the Year award at the start of the season were 4.00 (3/1; 300) to 5.00 (4/1; 400).

However, in the first half of the season, Henderson has been a big disappointment so far. Not because he is playing poorly, but because after playing five games, he suffered an injury and didn’t play almost the whole month of November.

The American scored 3, 13, and 13 points in his return from injury. And now he has to compete with the solid-looking Malcolm Brogdon at the point guard position.

All in all, a tough start to the season, missed games, and good-looking other rookies, and the odds are currently as high as 150.00 (149/1; 14900) for Henderson to become NBA Rookie of the Year.

Chet Holmgren, selected as the second overall pick in the 2022 NBA Rookie Draft, was considered one of the top contenders for the NBA Rookie of the Year award last season.

Before the NBA Summer League, the American was at odds of around 6.00 (5/1; .500), and after a great game in the Summer League, in which he scored 23 points and made four three-pointers, he has increased his chances considerably.

Nevertheless, the American’s odds dropped to 4.60 (3.6/1; 360) and were lower than first-round pick Paolo Banchero, who was at 5.40 (4.4/1; 440).

However, the situation quickly changed when Holmgren was injured, and it was announced at the end of August 2022 that he would miss the upcoming season. This immediately boosted Paolo Banchero’s chances of winning the NBA Rookie of the Year title, which he later won.

Although Holmgren did not debut in the league last season, he had the opportunity to get to know the league up close. After his injury, he could travel with the team, focus more on individual workouts, and spend much more time with his teammates.

As the season starts, Holmgren doesn’t feel like a rookie in the Thunder, translating into better play.

In 16 games played so far, Holmgren has averaged 18.1 points, eight rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.3 blocked shots per game. He does all that in 29.9 minutes per game.

In comparison, Victor Wembanyama plays almost the same amount of 30.1 minutes. There is virtually no difference in the personal stats; only Holmgren puts these numbers together with an impressive assist rate. He makes 56.4% of his shots, 43.8% of his threes and 88.1% of his free throws.

The rookie has a chance to finish the season with elite 50-40-90 numbers. Meanwhile, Wembanyama shoots 43% from the field, 27.5% from three-point range, and 82.4% from the free throw line.

Holmgren’s 1.94 (0.94/1; -106) is down compared to the start of the season. In the summer, the American had a 6.00 (5/1; 500) – 8.00 (7/1; 700) multiplier, even higher than the aforementioned S. Henderson.

Nowadays, we are seeing such a drop for two reasons: statistically, Victor Wembanyama is very close to the Frenchman, and in terms of efficiency, he is even more helpful. Also, his team’s results are much better compared to Spurs.

Already, the big man has received praise from other stars in the league, and all that is left to do is enjoy his extraordinary talent. Nevertheless, the odds are at 1.65 (0.65/1; -154) for Wembanyama to be NBA Rookie of the Year. Let’s look at why Wembanyama is still getting solid odds.

The Frenchman has played all 17 games in the NBA so far, averaging 19.2 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.6 blocked shots.

While these statistics are impressive, it is worth noting that the Spurs currently have just three wins and 14 losses. With this record, the Spurs are tied with the Grizzlies for last place in the Western Conference.

Although team performance is usually not considered when choosing the Rookie of the Year, this year could be different. The Frenchman’s main rival, C. Holmgren, plays for the Thunder, which is currently in second place in the Western Conference.

Staying at the top will be challenging, but this team can make the playoffs. Considering that Holmgren is on a winning team and all the attention is not on him like it is on Wembanyama on the Spurs, we are looking at odds of 1.65 (0.65/1; -154), not 1.20 (0.2/1; -500) or even lower.

If Scoot Henderson’s start of the season was a surprise on the negative side, looking at the positives, we can point to Ausar Thompson’s – 40.00 (39/1; 3900) and Brandon Miller’s – 120.00 (119/1; 11900).

Ausar Thompson was drafted fifth overall in the 2023 NBA Draft, just behind his brother, who was drafted fourth overall by the Rockets. Thompson plays for the Pistons, where he has much freedom.

Playing 30.3 minutes per game, he averages 11.4 points, 9.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists. The 40 (39/1; 3900) is a high odds, and the American is currently ranked third in the odds.

Brandon Miller, who was the second overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, is currently averaging 30.3 minutes per game for the Hornets. He scored an average of 14.1 points, grabbing 4.1 rebounds and making 1.9 assists.

These stats are behind the other three best rookies in the league, which is why the American is currently being given odds of 120 (119/1; 11900) to be named NBA Rookie of the Year.
