The FIFA World Cup begins for Mexico with a home match against South Africa, and on paper this looks like one of the more favourable opening fixtures available to the hosts.
Mexico enter the tournament ranked 15th in the FIFA rankings, while South Africa arrive in 60th place. With the match taking place in Mexico City, the hosts will expect to start their World Cup campaign with three points.
Mexico have been extremely difficult to break down in recent months. Their last six matches produced five clean sheets, including victories against Australia, Ghana, Iceland, Panama and Bolivia. The only team to score against them during that stretch was Belgium in a 1-1 draw.
The defensive numbers are particularly encouraging. Mexico kept clean sheets against Portugal, Australia, Ghana, Iceland, Panama and Bolivia, showing consistent organisation regardless of the opposition.

South Africa team arrive with a more mixed set of results. They were held to a goalless draw by Nicaragua in their most recent outing and also failed to score against Egypt earlier this year. While South Africa have produced goals against weaker opposition, they have generally found life much more difficult against stronger international FIFA teams.
Mexico simply arrive in better form and against stronger opposition than South Africa have faced recently. Mexico have looked comfortable controlling matches and limiting chances, while South Africa have struggled for consistency against higher-level opponents.
The first-half and full-time Mexico victory market also looks attractive.
With home support behind them and a clear advantage in quality, Mexico have every chance to take control of the match early, and if they establish an early lead, they should have enough quality and defensive stability to see the result through.
Considering Mexico’s recent defensive record, home advantage and overall squad quality, backing the hosts to lead at half-time and win the match, alongside South Africa failing to score.
