Copa America Predictions: Argentina – Colombia (14-07-2024)

Like the EURO 2024, the Copa America 2024 tournament has reached its final, with Argentina defending its title and Colombia challenging them in a historic showdown.

If Argentina reaching the final is no surprise, not many expected Colombia to be here before the start of the tournament.

Argentina reached the final without facing any serious opponent. They beat Canada, Chile, and Peru in the group stage and Ecuador and Canada again in the playoffs.

Colombia, meanwhile, had a much more balanced path, facing weaker teams – 2-1 against Paraguay, 3-0 against Costa Rica, and 5-0 against Panama in the quarter-finals – as well as stronger teams – 1-1 against Brazil and 1-0 against Uruguay in the semi-finals.

Colombia has not lost 28 games in a row. A truly impressive streak, and symbolically, it all started with a defeat against the same Argentinian team on 2 February 2022.

Argentina and Colombia have not met during this entire period, so it will be very interesting to see whether Colombia can make amends and thus extend this series or whether Argentina will celebrate victory as it did last time.

Even though the Argentine team has not met a serious opponent, this does not mean the team is not ready to win the tournament. The players are not tired, the talent is much greater than in Colombia, and there should be no lack of motivation. The world champions still have Lionel Messi on the squad, who clearly lifts the team atmosphere.

James Rodriguez has six assists for Colombia. Although Colombia is considered an underdog, it will undoubtedly feel the pressure.

These long streaks have to end at some point, as we can recall this season when Bayer Leverkusen suffered their only defeat in the Europa Cup final, despite being considered favourites there. If we exclude the fact that this is the Copa America final and Colombia has such a streak, Argentina would be a clear favourite.

The bookmakers have set odds that are not very favorable to bet on. For example, the odds of Argentina becoming champions are only 1.57. A win in extra time has odds of 2.25, which is good value, but we should note that the Copa America final is the only match in the tournament where extra time will be played instead of penalties being kicked straight away.

As a result, in the event of a draw at the end of the match, Argentina can take less risk and take the extra 30 minutes in extra time. In this case, a -0.25 Asian handicap seems to be the optimal option.
