Tournament Format
Stage 1: Group Stage
The 16 participating teams are divided into four groups (Group A, B, C, and D), each consisting of four teams. In the group stage, each team plays every other team in their group once, following a round-robin format.
This results in a total of six matches per group. Teams earn points based on their performance: 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss.
The top two teams from each group advance to the knockout stage (quarterfinals), while the bottom two teams in each group are eliminated from the competition.
Stage 2: Knockout Stage
The knockout stage is a single-elimination tournament. The eight teams that advance from the group stage compete in a series of single-elimination matches. In this format, the loser of each match is immediately eliminated from the tournament.
The winners progress through each round, culminating in the final match. The two teams that win their respective semi-final matches play in the final to determine the champion of Copa América 2024.
Copa América History
The Copa América is South America’s top football event and the oldest international tournament, starting in 1916 and held every year. Traditionally, all ten CONMEBOL member countries compete, but recently, guest teams from other continents have joined.
This is the second time the U.S. will host, following the 2016 Copa América Centenario. Argentina is the current champion, having won in 2021.
