EURO 2024 Predictions: Austria – France (17-06-2024)

The 2022 FIFA World Cup runners-up come to EURO 2024 with big ambitions.

They suffered a surprising defeat against the Swiss in the EURO 2020 quarter-finals, and there is no doubt they will fight for the top spots in this tournament. France has talent in every position, and it is not just about Kylian Mbappe.

France will play in Group D, where there is no clear outsider, so all the matches will be tough. In addition to Austria, there are matches against Poland and the Netherlands.

The French are the favourites here, but it won’t be easy – all four teams could be fighting for a place in the play-offs. The French will never relax, and we should see a high level of play from the very first game.

Austria is not in the best of moods for EURO 2024, as they will be without one of their national team leaders, David Alaba, who hasn’t recovered from his injury.

Marko Arnautovic, Marcel Sabitzer, Michael Gregoritsch, Christoph Baumgartner, and Konrad Laimer can be excluded from the Austrian line-up. Most of the squad plays in Germany, so they have seen high-level football.

France has looked solid in the group stages, finishing first at EURO 2020 and the 2022 World Cup. At EURO 2020, they won their first match against the Germans but then drew twice against Hungary and Portugal.

The 2022 World Cup got off to a much more confident start with a 4-1 win over Australia and a 2-1 win over Denmark. In the last round, they secured first place with a 0-1 defeat against Tunisia.

As we saw later, a solid start in the group stage led to a good performance at the World Cup. There will be no time to relax this year, as the second match will be against the Netherlands. Scattered points against the Austrians could put France in a difficult situation.

The French have not been dominant in friendly matches, with a 0:2 defeat against the Germans, a 3:2 win against Chile, a 3:0 win against Luxembourg, and a 0:0 win against Canada.

However, France is one of the teams that can afford to arrive at the championship in less than top form and, thanks to their talent, shift into a higher gear in the first match.
