The second round of the EURO 2024 group stage will start on 19 June, and Group A will be one of the first groups to play its second matches. Scotland started the tournament with a disappointing 1-5 defeat against the host Germans, while Switzerland beat the Hungarians 3-1.
In this match, the Swiss can secure a place in the play-offs, and it is immediately notable that the Swiss and the French rarely miss the play-offs. The Swiss are hard to beat in the group stages, and the Scots will find it very difficult here.

There is not much to say about the Scottish national team’s first match at EURO 2024 – the game was lost rather quickly. The national teams are on different levels. The Germans took all the pressure off after scoring an early goal and, surrounded by their fans, started to enjoy the game.
Switzerland looked very solid against the Hungarians. They were in full control at the start of the game, went 2-0 up, and relaxed a bit. When the Hungarians reduced the gap, the Swiss came back and closed the game with a third goal.

A Swiss victory over the Scots would secure the play-offs and put them in contention with the Germans for first place in the group.
Germany’s resounding victory over the Scots will likely give them an advantage over the Swiss if they draw against each other. Therefore, the Swiss are also motivated here not only to win but also to score as many goals as possible,
Switzerland’s odds against the Hungarians were around 2.10, so it is not surprising that they are slightly lower against the Scots.
However, the win against Hungary was really solid and the Swiss should be considered as clear favourites against the Scots than they are now. Scotland will not have Ryan Porteous, who received a red card against Germany.
A Scottish defeat would not definitively knock Hungary out of the tournament if Hungary loses against the Germans. In that case, the Scots and the Hungarians will have 0 points each, and everything will be decided in the last match.
If Scotland wins, three points may be enough to qualify for the play-offs as one of the best third-placed teams. However, against both the Swiss and the Hungarians, Scotland looks like a pretty clear underdog.
