The long-awaited European Football Championship kicks off on 14 June. On this day, there will be just one opening match between Germany and Scotland.

The Germans, playing at home, are the clear favourites in Group A, but it won’t be easy, as in addition to Scotland, there are matches against Hungary and Switzerland.

Germany has not been performing well in international tournaments recently, not even making it out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup group.

The last time Germany and Scotland played each other was almost ten years ago, on 7 September 2015, when the Germans won 3-2 in the qualification for the European Championship. The last meeting won’t impact the upcoming matches, so we can look at the teams’ recent results together.

Germany has played four friendlies ahead of EURO 2024, winning three against France, the Netherlands, and Greece.

Scotland also played four games, losing 0:4 to the Netherlands, 0:1 to Northern Ireland, and won 2:0 against Gibraltar. Against Finland, the match ended in a draw – 2:2. The results did not look convincing, and the start of EURO 2024 could be very difficult.

If we look back at previous tournaments, the opening matches were Italy 3-0 Turkey, France 2-1 Romania. World Cups: Qatar 0:2 Ecuador, Russia 5:0 Saudi Arabia, Brazil 3:1 Croatia.

The results are in favour of the hosts; only Qatar has not won an opening match in the last five major football tournaments. Germany is the favourite, and a two-goal lead certainly does not seem impossible.

The opening of the tournament, the home crowd, the motivation of the footballers – all this should lead to a relatively easy victory.
