The Copa America 2024 tournament is in full swing, with crucial group matches before the play-offs. The third match of Group D will be Brazil – Colombia on 2 July. If the Colombians have already secured their place in the play-offs, the Brazilians still need at least a draw.

Even if the Brazilians lose, still second place is almost guaranteed, as only Costa Rica can beat them. This team needs to beat Paraguay and have a better goal-scored/conceded ratio than the Brazilians. At the moment, Costa Rica’s goal difference is -3, and Brazil’s is +3, so the chances are not really great.

In this Copa America, Colombia won 2-1 against Paraguay and 3-0 against Costa Rica. Meanwhile, Brazil played 0-0 against Costa Rica and won the second match 4-1 against Paraguay.

The Colombian national team’s good in the Copa America is not a big surprise. The national team is in fantastic form. Their last defeat was on 2 February 2022, when they lost 0-1 to Argentina in the World Cup qualifiers.

They failed to qualify for the World Cup, but since then, they have had 20 wins and five draws. During this stretch, they also beat Brazil 2-1 at the end of 2023.

If we look at the Brazilian national team’s record, it is certainly not the best, with only 3 wins, 4 draws and 3 defeats in the last 10 matches. The victory against Paraguay was solid, but we can remember the game against Costa Rica, when we were unable to capitalise on the chances we created.

This match will be for first place in the group. It doesn’t matter which team finishes first; the most important thing is that both teams qualify for the playoffs.

However, Colombia’s motivation for first place should be much greater, as it would allow them to avoid a quarter-final meeting with Uruguay, who are in great form. Meanwhile, Brazil is not a team that should be scared of its opponents – if they fail to win, there will be no disappointment.

The most important thing for the Brazilians, of course, is to qualify for the playoffs. For Colombia, it is a great opportunity to at least draw, continue their solid run of form without defeat, and take first place in the group.
